Falling from relatively low height, can cause severe and life-changing injury and most are easily preventable.

The re-launch of a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) campaign that warns about the dangers of falls from vehicles. This type of incident involving workplace transport is a major cause of injuries and costs industry over £35 million each year. The campaign will highlight the many cost effective ways that exist to stop these falls happening. Last year more than 1600 workers were injured and 4 were killed by falling from vehicles. Spot-checks highlight danger of unrestrained vehicle loads

More than three quarters of vehicles stopped during safety checks in England and Wales were not loaded safely – putting motorists and loading staff at risk.

Officials from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) stopped 40 vehicles during three days of checks in Wrexham, Birmingham and Humberside. Although the majority needed remedial action to make the load safe for onward travel and unloading, in most cases drivers were able to solve the problem safely within minutes. Further checks are now planned. During the last three years, 14 people have been killed and more than 2,000 people have been injured by cargo falling from vehicles when they are being loaded or unloaded. The need for companies to carry out suitable risk assessments to ensure that a safe system of work is in place.

The Health and Safety Executive is warning employers to ensure staff are suitably trained for the safe movement of heavy machinery following the prosecution of a Cardiff company. The warning comes after one of its employees was severely injured when an 800kg machine toppled onto him. HSE launches prevent falls from vehicles campaign

Last year 1600 workers were injured and 4 were killed by falling from vehicles

February sees the re-launch of a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) campaign that warns about the dangers of falls from vehicles. This type of incident involving workplace transport is a major cause of injuries and costs industry over £35 million each year.
